In the movie Mad Money - i still dont understand why they would shred the money?

can someone explain the process and whyyyy they would shred the money? and dont they end up loosing that money?|||I saw Mad Money, according to the characters in the movie they shred it because it gets old and prone to falling apart. I think they do this in real life too...
